SNAP Week 26 – previous week’s tech ecosystem highlights


Government facilitates, private enterprise runs

If you study economic history, you will find that sustained economic development has only happened when the private sector takes the lead. But many developing countries which are in a hurry to catch up and attain developed nation status feel that the initial push to get things off the ground and running has to come from government.

Count Malaysia in that category. Count Malaysians in that category too. If only I could collect RM1 each time I heard the plea, “Our government must do more!”

But you can successfully mix the two. If government does its job well in being the facilitator and connector for business, private enterprise can move much faster.

This is in fact what is happening in the Northern Corridor Economic Region through the efforts of implementation agency Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA). Specifically I am struck by how the NCIA identified a local company QAV Technologies Sdn Bhd and got things going there.

Another agency, CREST, aims to follow the same path as NCIA but with more of a focus on commercialization and innovation in mainly engineering and technology companies.

With government getting its act together, there has never been a better time to be an entrepreneur.

Eating out of his hands!

HE wowed them, he inspired and he heard their one-minute pitches, almost 30 of them. And he probably was the first billionaire in Asia to appear on Google Hangout. Only at the DNA-TeAM Disrupt series.

I am talking about none other than the most famous angel investor in Malaysia, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, founder of the Berjaya Group.

Speaking to a packed audience of around 150 people, many of them entrepreneurs, Tan had the crowd in stitches with some of his anecdotes. But it was mostly pin-drop silence as they took in his every word as he shared the lessons he had learned investing RM200 million (US$66 million) into 20 startups over the past 12 years.

The video that accompanies the story is just over one hour long, but I assure you, this is one video absolutely worth watching.

With Tan’s interest in Internet startups, it is also fitting that we featured two promising startups in Malaysia. Both could not be further apart when it comes to their founders, for one, Fadzarudin Shah Anuar is just into his first business and is 24 years old while the other, Zafrul Noordin, had been running a traditional business for about seven years before deciding to chase his Internet dream last year.

Who says only those below 35 can launch Internet-based startups?

The other stories I like are two commentaries by DNA editors. One raps Microsoft’s knuckles for not walking the talk after being in Malaysia for 20 years, while the other takes a look at why Apple is launching an iPad Mini.

Rounding off the week is a piece about how the Malaysian-born CEO of Singapore’s National Research Foundation, an academic turned entrepreneur, is trying to encourage more academics to get involved in the entrepreneurial world.

More on Budget 2013, and an interesting JV

I am highlighting a few more Budget-related stories to you. One is a superb wrap-up with selected comments from some of the top tech leaders in the industry, and the other is one half of a debate between me and A. Asohan on whether the Budget was a good one or not for the ICT industry. Read Asohan’s piece and tell me if you share his disappointment.

Edwin Yapp was on the ground for BFM’s Breakaway annual conference and wrote a piece that I found really insightful from the panel session featuring the likes of Mark Chang and TS Wong. Check out which one of them regrets selling his Apple shares on hearing that Steve Jobs was being brought back to run Apple in 1996!

Meanwhile, IT retailers must be wishing for the blissful days before smartphones and tablets started eating into the market share of laptops and when margins were above 10%. As we highlighted on Sept 28, IT retailers claim they are hurting big time and about to die off. However Pikom, the National ICT Association, is telling them to adapt to market forces and move up the value chain.

If you know MDeC’s Dinesh Nair, then you are going to do a double-take on reading about his move to Microsoft. Yup, the one-time hacker and still OSS advocate is joining the ‘dark empire.’ What was his motivation? A. Asohan has that story for you.

One story I am excited to share with you is a joint venture formed by two local tech companies, MOL Global is well known in Asia, while the other, Soft Space, is an eight-month old start-up that is already creating waves. Read about the rationale for their JV and also the background on how Soft Space began life.

In July I had written about how startup maxman.tv was due to launch its action-packed content channel. Well, it did. But what is interesting about the entrepreneur running maxman.tv, Ahmad Izmir, is his angel. It is apparently one of the Naza brothers. But which one?

Specialised Marketing Mission on ICT to Manila, Philippines (by 15 August, 2012)

MATRADE is pleased to inform that we will be organising a Specialised Marketing Mission on ICT to Manila, The Philippines from 15th to 17th October 2012.

2. The objectives of the mission are to explore opportunities between Malaysia and Philippines companies in ICT products, software and related services, promoting exports of Malaysian ICT products, software and related services to Philippines, to strengthening business relationship between Malaysia and Philippines and to familiarise Malaysian ICT companies with business environment in Philippines.

3. Thus, MATRADE is pleased to invite Malaysian companies offering ICT related products, software and related services to participate in this mission. Participating companies should only promote Made-in-Malaysia related products during the mission. Interested companies are to register their participation online at the link to the MATRADE website below:

The programme shall include:
(a) One-to-one business matching;
(b) Sales pitch session;
(c) Roundtable discussion; and

The fee will be used to cover some of the administrative costs in arranging the mission, local ground transportation and networking receptions as indicated in the programme. Other costs, such as air tickets, accommodation, meals (other than that indicated specifically in the programme) as well as other incidental costs will be borne by individual participants.

5. Only complete applications with the participation fee mentioned above will be processed. All applicants will be informed on the outcome of their application within 2 weeks after 15th August 2012 (closing registration date). The participation fee is non-refundable upon confirmation of your company participation by MATRADE and it is also applicable to personnel participation, meaning that MATRADE will not refund should one of the company representative (should company representative is more than one) pulled out from the delegation. Technology news update: DNA Snap 8th Edition


We’ve got the Silicon Valley covered!

DNA has its eyes and ears on the Silicon Valley this month, thanks to Goh Ai Ching of Piktochart who is sending us a weekly snap shot of her experiences in the Valley.

To recap, Ai Ching was the winner of Startup Malaysia’s search for the 10 most promising startups in Malaysia. She also writes a weekly piece for Startupmalaysia.org which you can check out. Her first piece for DNA is a delightful read, you will enjoy it!

One of the things Ai Ching is already facing is the need to hire good engineers and It’s a pain point all growing companies face. In that case you will be most interested to read a short piece I did on Code Army, a start-up launched by an experienced entrepreneur with 12 years of running his company under him.

I raise this point about his experience because I think it gives Zafrul Noordin, the commander-in-chief of Code Army an edge in building his promising startup that aims to create a platform for virtual talent with elements of Gamification added in. Zafrul claims it has got Microsoft and Stanford excited, so do check it out.

Related to recruiting talent is an excellent piece by The Growth Guy, Verne Harnish. A Fortune magazine columnist specialising in fast growing companies, DNA is the only media in Asean that carries his columns. See what Harnish has to say about the importance of team effort in recruiting.

One hot potato of an EPP

THE MyEmail Entry Point Project (EPP) undertaken by Tricubes Bhd was thrust into the spotlight last week when Bursa Malaysia rejected the regularization plan submitted by Tricubes.

The project itself is not in jeopardy though, so claims the main stakeholders. How do we know? DNA was the only media that got reactions from Pemandu and Khairun Mokhtar, Tricubes CEO.

In other main news, the details of Digital Malaysia, the country’s blueprint to take Malaysia into the next phase of our digital future, was unveiled this week.

After you’re done with that, check out how Malaysian entrepreneurs take advantage of technology platforms offerred by multinationals to create their own innovative solutions and services.

Meanwhile, living up to our promise to keep readers on top of the Evidence Act, I am proud to bring you the first reaction piece from the service providers themselves. See what MOL Friendster Hotspots chief, Ganesh Bangah, the owner of an operator of one of the largest Wi-Fi hotspots in town, Telekom Malaysia and one other operator have to say.

One other interesting article is my candid chat with NSN Malaysia boss John Lancester-Lennox where he talks about why he thinks the vendor-operator landscape in the industry is “a bit broken”. It was an eye opener for me.

Last but not the least, do also read about how one local music streaming provider is unfazed by the entry of Apple’s iTunes into Malaysia, as well as Edwin Yapp’s questions as to whether we are addicted to our gadgets and gizmos or not.
