Technology news update: DNA Snap 5th Edition

We’ve made it past a month!

What a month it has been. Tiring, multitasking in between interviews, having one foot in so many places, but at the same time, exciting and feeling great bringing you all these stories the past month.

In any case, thanks so much for your support so far, dear readers!

For this issue, I am tempted to say that the launch of Malaysia’s own crowd sourcing initiative called pitchedIN would be the highlight of the week.

But if your interest lies more towards the workings of the Internet, that all critical highway of the knowledge economy, then you will undoubtedly want to read what the brainiacs at Bell Labs have to say about the next generation Internet.

Another not-to-miss story is how one of Singapore’s most exciting start-ups in 2009, Chalkboard, fell from grace this year.

You’ll also want to read the commentary by a startup founder on why he invested about RM50,000 to buy a “.com” domain for his business, as well as our first overseas contributor, Verne Harnish, on his thoughts on strategy.

Lastly, check out the latest survey by PayPal on the rise of mobile commerce in Malaysia, how it has grown fourfold since 2010.

Enjoy your read, and as always let us know your thoughts at feedback@digitalnewsasia.com

Best regards,

Karamjit Singh

A sizzling week – top stories of the week for 21 – 25 May 2012

IF DNA had an ecosystem seismometer, the readings would have been off the charts! Yes, it has been that sizzling a week for the tech ecosystem.

From telcos introducing cloud services, to listing plans of a homegrown global tech company, to Digi.com Bhd’s CEO Henrik Clausen speaking about the direct link between execution capabilities and the quality of people one has, this week’s Digital News Asia is an awesome read.

We had a tough time trying to stick to our five top stories of the week and so, we didn’t! However, if there is only one story you want to read this week, make it Edwin Yapp’s Evidence Act amendments, a slippery slope.

Be scared. Be very scared.

Business Model Canvas (BMC) by Cradle Fund Sdn. Bhd. (22 & 23 March, 2012)

In rapidly changing technology and business environments, entrepreneurs can no longer build successful companies based on existing, traditional or old business models. The idea that what worked earlier will continue to work forever, is outdated and dangerous thinking. Unique and creative business models have the ability to change an entire industry and make new entrants hugely successful and profitable, while incumbents die a slow and painful death. This is proven in the case of Apple and Google whereby their new iPhone and Android phone business models have enabled them to become new market leaders in the mobile phone industry, easily beating former market leader Nokia.

New Business Models are clearly critical to compete more successfully, to offer better value and to gain exceptional margins of profitability. Sadly, most Malaysian companies or entrepreneurs don’t even understand Business Models and tend to follow the crowd by copying or adopting the business models of their closest competitors, which leaves them having to compete on the same playing field. This in turn often results in failure to entice customers or just barely surviving on a day-to-day basis. So, how do you tell if your product or solution will be accepted by customers? How do you tell if your business plan is a viable business model that will guarantee good business and attract potential investors?

To help you address these questions and many more, Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd (Cradle) and Proficeo Consultations (Proficeo) is pleased to invite you to attend an exclusive Business Model Canvas Workshop themed Designing Profitable Business Models on 22 & 23 March at Plug & Play, Mid Valley.

This two-day workshop is specially designed to help start-up companies as well as existing and potential technopreneurs such as yourself, to design profitable business models and to understand your core strengths and capacity in order to become successful and sustainable technopreneurs. So, sign up now and you may just uncover a business model that will help your business to create a powerful new direction towards more profitable growth.
